You will find many lovely children’s books on creation, but what you need are those gems that open up the gospel promised in Genesis and revealed in Christ.
Here are three of my favourites.
Creation by Devon and Jessica Provencher (ISBN 978 1 433 578 854).
We start with how God designed the earth and humanity, but also explicitly cover God’s plan to redeem believers from sin. It concludes with the gospel promise of a “new creation” through Christ.
Target Age: 1 to 5 years old. Reading Level: This is a “read-to-me” picture board book. While the sentence structures are simple, the vocabulary includes advanced terms (such as “existence,” “Triune,” and “communion”) intended to plant early seeds of understanding.
God’s Very Colourful Creation by Tim Thornborough (ISBN 978 1 784 986 339).
While the book focus on the first chapters of the Bible, the concepts of creation, Jesus Christ, salvation, and the gospel are deeply intertwined. Creation points to the Creator and His glory. Creation was made through Jesus Christ. Creation was broken, requiring the gospel of salvation. The conclusion is the Revelation account of the kingdom of God, signifying that God’s plan of salvation will ultimately result in the renewal of all things.
It is designed as a read-aloud picture book using interactive storytelling techniques, rhythm and repetition that keep toddlers engaged.
The Caring Creator by Carine MacKenzie (ISBN 978 1 527 112 759). Carine explores the story of the Bible from Genesis to a restored world, detailing God’s creation, the fall of man, and redemption.
What sets this book apart is the full Biblical narrative and the centrality of Christ. It concludes with an explicit call to the reader to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Skill Level: Easy-to-read sentence structures with vibrant, page-filling illustrations. Content Level: Intermediate theology made accessible, guiding young readers from simple Genesis concepts into the full gospel timeline.
