“Many things about the evangelical world I live in and love mitigate against the commission of Jesus Christ to make disciples.”
A strong statement to be sure, but please hear me out. It is my conviction that a reformation in discipleship is among the church’s greatest needs today.
What is “discipleship”?
If we had asked the 11 disciples what Jesus had meant by the commission “make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28v16-20) they would surely have replied something like this: “Jesus is asking us to do for the world what He has just done for us over the last three years.” And what had Jesus done for the Twelve? He had spent many long hours with them in person teaching them, by both lip and life, His ways.
