Leaving a church

Dear Editor,

I can see why John Funnell wrote about why he wants to lay out the case for loyalty to church as to a family or spouse.

But I think there are plenty of circumstances, outside of disagreements over primary issues, that might mean it is best to leave a church.

If remaining in a church would cause damage to someone’s spiritual, mental or physical health then maybe it is a good idea to move on. If we push the idea too far that we shouldn’t leave a church, then some people will end up staying far longer than loyalty or Jesus demands.

Bearing with one another can become a theology that enables abusive behaviour to continue rather than be challenged.

Churches are full of wolves, false teachers and human beings with an intellect and character far below the standard needed to lead people without causing harm.

Yours sincerely,
