I fully understand Andy Mellen’s reasons as a Christian for being a member of the Green Party as it once was, even if I disagree with him on some of its environmental policies. Unfortunately he didn’t mention that the Green Party of today is not the old Green Party.
Under Zack Polanski’s leadership it has become a radical left-wing party that among other things advocates legalisation of class A drugs and prostitution which, as many have pointed out, were not publicised in the recent by-election for fear of alienating the socially conservative Muslims whose votes they were courting. The party also supports assisted suicide.
Its policy in relation to Gaza is unbalanced in its hostility to Israel and is arguably antisemitic. I can’t see how a Christian can support a party with such policies.
I suppose a Christian can support a party with an economically illiterate leader that has totally crazy economic policies (rent controls that have never worked anywhere, billions more borrowed to spend on our ailing welfare system, massive nationalisation and more) that bear no relation to reality, but that doesn’t make them any less crazy.
And last but not least is the way the Green Party now is an alliance of radical leftists and radical Muslims. This is a very sinister development in British politics and Christians should have nothing to do with it.

Dear Editor,
As someone politically engaged it is important that we feel able to discuss politics as a Christian family. However I was disappointed by your recent article “I’m a Christian, and I’m Green – here’s why”.
Andy Mellen frames his decision solely around creation care. The editors should have challenged him to write a more comprehensive justification of his membership. To frame the Greens as solely about the environment is at least disingenuous and at worst deceptive.
The articles discussing party allegiance should cover their economics, foreign policy and matters important to evangelicals like beginning and end of life ethics. The Green Party are pro-euthanasia, pro-abortion, pro-gender affirmation. They also hold fairly controversial views on Iran, Gaza and economics.
If I’m honest I find it hard to see how any Christian can vote for them in this light, but that is a conversation for another day!
