Will the Jesus of a new TV programme coming to the BBC next year be portrayed as “woke”?
That’s the question being asked by a leader of Christians in Media after the corporation announced plans for the four-part series, which it describes as a “landmark religion series” development.
The BBC says it will draw on the latest historical research, archaeological discoveries, technological innovation and expert testimony. It describes Jesus as “the most recognised and influential figure in human history”.
Lani Charlwood, chair of Christians in Media, says: “I will be interested to see how Jesus is portrayed when it is released and how the ‘cinematic storytelling’ and testimony from ‘elsewhere’ mentioned in the article influence that portrayal.
“I don’t think it can be denied that many broadcasters – in large part led by social media – have become more woke in recent years. However, in theory, all media still has a duty to portray all religions accurately and fairly.”
The series (not yet publicly titled) is due to air next year. The BBC says that as well as “major Christian thinkers”, Muslim and Jewish faith leaders will also contribute.
