When a familiar face talks about Christian faith, people listen. An interview with a Hollywood actor, a musician speaking about conversion or a sports star thanking God after a major victory, can bring Christianity to the attention of millions who might never set foot inside a church.

For Christian publishers and broadcasters, these stories are an obvious attraction. They offer recognisable names, personal accounts of change and the opportunity to reach audiences well beyond the usual Christian readership. But there is always an important question to consider with this. Does celebrity Christianity genuinely help people discover faith, and are there dangers in the way these stories are told?

Bear Grylls, best known for his television survival adventures, has spoken openly about his Christian beliefs and supported the Alpha course, which introduces people to Christianity. Denzel Washington has spoken repeatedly about the importance of prayer and the Bible in his life. In December 2024, the actor was baptised at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in New York, where he had worshipped as a child.
