Why gathering together is such a good thing

Earbuds in. Phone out. A quick scroll. I have everything I need to get world-class Bible teaching. To listen to great music. And when I get bored, I can get AI to condense that half-hour sermon into a two-minute soundbite. Or pick something else my itching ears want to hear. Or just turn it all off.

In an online world, does gathering still matter?

I’m not talking about being part of a local church. That’s a non-negotiable. Zooming-in may be a least-worst option when we’re physically unable to meet. And when we’re unwell or housebound, we miss being with people. Because the New Creation will not be virtual. And to be truly human means to connect and interact with one another in time and space and place.

But the Keswick Convention is not the church. We’re not trying to be. The Convention exists to refresh God’s people with joy in Christ Jesus. To do something unique by gathering believers from a broad swathe of churches. To affirm that, for all our differences, at heart we are all one in Christ Jesus.

And that helps me, because my grasp of God’s grace is often narrowed by my background and my blind spots. And it helps me to see Jesus afresh through your eyes. And my joy in Jesus is amplified by your joy in Jesus. My courage to follow him is strengthened by your courage to follow him. And as we listen together, and talk about what we’ve heard, and grab a coffee or eat a picnic, my heart for Jesus is warmed by hearing an echo of your heart for Jesus.

And those who speak at the Convention won’t always be from my tribe either. But I can learn from them because I know they too will humbly point me away from themselves, to behold the lamb of God. That they will have prayerfully prepared for this summer, for this tent, for these people, in this place. And that by his Spirit, as we delight together in God’s word, Jesus Christ will once again be held out to us in all his beauty. And our affections will be won once again to find our rest in his astounding grace.

And then we get to sing! Together. With thousands of other voices on a scale none of us will have in our home churches in this country. To set our hearts on fire with the truths we’ve heard, and respond with joy to our God of spreading goodness.

And to think the Kids and Youth groups are doing the same: enjoying teaching by leaders who speak their language. Singing the same truths. Working it out in small groups, face-to-face with leaders who know and love them.

That’s why we gather. Why we’ve gathered in Keswick for 151 years. And then been sent back out for the remaining 51 weeks of the year: to live with a renewed passion to become more like Jesus, and with over-spilling joy, to want to make Him known.

And if you can’t make it or want to taste what you might be missing, we livestream all our Bible Readings and Evening Celebrations and many seminars freely every day. We’re thrilled that so many of you are able to join virtually. And that some churches have found a hybrid solution; gathering together each morning or evening, around the country, with coffee and cake to enjoy the livestreams together.

And, however you’re able to join us, our prayer is that you’ll be refreshed with joy in Christ Jesus for whatever your days may hold.
