CEEC launches a day of prayer for CofE

On Sunday 12 May, evangelical churches across the dioceses are invited to pray for the Church of England during their usual services, as part of an initiative by Church of England Evangelical Council (CEEC) called ‘Together in Prayer’.

The initiative comes following deep concerns about the trajectory of the Church of England regarding Living in Love and Faith (LLF).

'One of CEEC’s chief concerns in 2024 is that we continue to pray into the current Church of England situation regarding Living in Love and Faith and we’re asking churches across the dioceses to join us', says CEEC’s National Director, Revd Canon John Dunnett.

'It is apparent to all who have been following the recent debates in General Synod that – whatever your views – we are in a challenging situation, which is not helping either our unity or our witness. We need to pray that the Lord will enable His perfect will to be done and His kingdom to be built. We have released several resources to help ministers and lay people leading the prayers on 12 May', he continues.

The resources are available on the CEEC website and include:

  • A special prayer/collect for the day
  • Some suggested prayer pointers
  • Some advice on how to pray sensitively on the topic.

The CEEC’s hope is that the resources will be useful across the different church styles and traditions. Some churches use a liturgical format in their prayers and will – as a matter of course – pray weekly for the Church of England, her ministers and bishops and people. The prayer pointers offered on the CEEC website might enable these churches to pray specifically into the current LLF situation.

Other churches adopt a non-liturgical format and the resources provided might enable a particular/priority focus on the current situation regarding LLF in their praying together on 12 May.

The resources can be found here.
