Since 2016, 2,526 out of the 3,730 churches
that applied for government registration
have received licences. Before then it was
almost impossible for Egypt’s beleaguered
Christian community to obtain permissions
to construct or renovate church buildings.
The change resulted
from the Law
for
Building and Restoring Churches, which
repealed
the Ottoman-era
restrictions
that had previously hampered Christians.
Christians, who make up 10% of
the
population of Egypt, say that their situation
in
the Muslim-majority country
is now
better than it has been in living memory.
Laos: tortured and killed
Morning Star News
The body of Pastor Seetoud, the pastor of
an officially recognised church in Laos, has
been found with signs indicating he was
tortured and killed for his faith.
Christian leaders and police in central Laos’
Khammouane Province believe Seetoud was
killed for spreading the gospel amid rapid
local church growth. He had been expected
to meet other Christians in Thakhek, about
60 miles from his home. When he failed to
arrive after three hours, more than 20 people
searched for him on a mountain pass and at
a local hospital, without success.
