Dear Editor,
How can we avoid an evangelical celebrity culture? (Faith & Life column, October en)
The answer is by taking evangelical theology seriously. Celebrity thrives on the idea that some are more spiritually impressive than others. The gospel is clear. We all fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3v23). Calvin spoke of our “total depravity”, and the Prayer Book’s confession states “there is no health in us”. No evangelical preacher, author or leader worth their salt (Biblical reference intended) can claim otherwise, and should not accept a pedestal, or be given one. We are sinners dependent on grace.
