A new Prime Minister

Dear Editor,

I look forward to each month’s en and am inspired and enjoy the many articles that each edition contains.

This month’s June edition particularly drew me to David Burrowes’ article on the continuing UK leadership crisis. The country has now experienced six different Prime Ministers in less than ten years, and the seventh one begins.

David Burrowes warns and comments on this alarming situation, which I agree with, but also turns lament and dismay into hope and positivity.

Surely, we have still not learnt from past history. I believe it was Talleyrand, a French statesman, who labelled Britain as the “sick old man of Europe”. An apt comment for today, perhaps? Are not current political infighting and power struggles a sign of increasing secularism and lack of faith? Of our past six Prime Ministers, both David Cameron and Theresa May expressed personal faith in God, but the next four have not.

As we seek to pray for present and future government, the en article encourages us to obey the commands of Scripture (eg: Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2 ) and to take a fresh look at inspiring examples of Old Testament Governments/Kings. And I find many of the Psalms very helpful, as we seek to support the Government of our country, as well as “governing” ourselves our churches and families.

Oh for some levelheadedness! Oh for government which cares for our beleaguered country (not self aggrandisement)! Oh for leadership of strong common sense!

All this as we look forward to the great “Government of Heaven” return to Earth and, at last … our Lord Jesus will be King.
