While in Cheriton, Folkestone I popped into the Public Library and asked for a Bible.
The librarian told me that only two public libraries in Kent had Bibles (and they are in the reference sections). There and then I wrote a note to the acquisition department how strange I found it that the most-read and translated book in the world and the most influential writing in the English language was not on the shelves.
I wandered over to the shelves. In the religious section, ‘New Atheists’ like Dawkins featured, and titles such as: Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed at All were displayed. I thought of the Scripture from Amos:
‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord God, ‘when I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.’ (Amos 8:11)
