A tape of renowned pastor Martyn Lloyd-Jones preaching in Welsh, thought to be the only known recording of its kind, has come to light after more than five decades.
The rare audio was recorded by the parents of pastor Gareth J. Evans, who messaged MLJ Trust audio restorer Robert Stone to say that he had several open reel tapes that his parents had recorded in Aberystwyth during the 1960s at various churches.
“Gareth said one was certainly the Dr preaching in Welsh,” Stone told en. Evans wasn’t sure what was on the remaining tapes but said they “might” be Lloyd-Jones preaching at the annual Aberystwyth conference. “I cannot confirm that part yet, as I have yet to work on those tapes,” Stone added.
Stone told en that some weeks ago he was also sent an original BBC Wales radio broadcast which aired in Welsh on 1 January 1965 and is believed to be the only surviving BBC Wales radio interview that Lloyd-Jones gave.
The MLJ Trust has also announced the release of a set of tapes, part of a collection of around 30 recordings that has recently been given to the Trust. It includes recordings from the Puritan Conference, an annual gathering started in the 1950s at Westminster Chapel in London. Hosted by Lloyd-Jones, and co-founded with theologian J.I. Packer, the conference saw ministers, theologians and students studying the Puritans and “their continuing relevance to the life of the church”. Since April, the MLJ Trust has been releasing the collection weekly and plans to continue to do so over the coming months. The first release was Lloyd-Jones’ address from the 1962 Conference, “Puritan Perplexities: Some Lessons from 1640–1662”.
