The original volumes of the Expository Thoughts on the Gospels have served for more than a century and a half as an invaluable companion to readers of the Gospels, whether they are preachers or general readers.
J.C. Ryle, who became the first Bishop of Liverpool, was an elegant writer whose prose is clear and simple. So I was initially a little sceptical of the idea of Ryle’s Expository Thoughts on the Gospels being modernised. It would have been interesting to have had an introductory note on the philosophy behind this process.
