Daily devotions are always good and always need new stimulus.
This little book to help us with our Bible reading and prayers is one of the latest in the ‘Food for the Journey’ series with each day’s comment being adapted from ministry given in previous years at the Keswick Convention.
Comment and challenge
There is a suggested Scripture reading of around 15 verses, followed by a comment on a couple of them by Liam Goligher and a challenge from the passage. I enjoyed working through the material: it is generally helpful.
However, although I think this format works well for, say short NT epistles, I felt that it struggled when taking on a very large and important OT book like Ezekiel. There is a short introduction to Ezekiel and the situation in which he found himself in Babylon, but what is lacking is any cogent overview of the whole book. Ezekiel is not the easiest prophet to understand anyway, but this lack of a worthwhile synopsis left me feeling unsatisfied Although there are certainly some helpful encouragements, they were titbits and I had not really got to grips with the thrust of the message. It is a valiant attempt, but left me reaching for something more substantial.
