The Free Church of Scotland says it is "profoundly saddened" at the death of Professor John R McIntosh, who died on Saturday 16 August.

Prof McIntosh served as minister of both the Lochgilphead and Aultbea Free Church congregations before being appointed as Professor of Church History at the Free Church College (now Edinburgh Theological Seminary) in 2005. He retired from there in 2017.

Principal of Edinburgh Seminary Iver Martin said: “As well as knowing Prof McIntosh as a friend, I had the honour of working closely with him for several years. He was highly respected as an academic, particularly in the area of 18th and 19th century Scottish ecclesiastical history.”
