Alan Millard (1937-2024)

Alan Millard, a leading evangelical scholar who for decades bridged the worlds of archaeology, Assyriology and the Old Testament, has died.

Previously vice-chairman of the British School of Archaeology in Iraq, he was also Rankin Professor Emeritus of Hebrew and Ancient Semitic languages, and Honorary Senior Fellow (Ancient Near East), at the School of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at the University of Liverpool (where had taught since 1970).

For six years to 1970, he was librarian at Tyndale House, Cambridge – where he was heavily involved for many years until his death.

Millard was one of the few scholars in the world with expertise in Akkadian. He was also a prolific author of books such as The Eponyms of the Assyrian Empire and Discoveries from the Time of Jesus.

Theologian Koert van Bekkum paid tribute to Alan Millard as: ‘A giant among the epigraphers in both cuneiform and alphabetic texts from the Ancient Near East.’

Writing on X, principal at Tyndale House Peter Williams described him as ‘cautious’ and ‘gracious’ and would be much missed.
