That such things should happen among those professing the soundest of doctrine is repugnant, vile and wicked. Many leaders knew – and yet Smyth was able to continue abusing for decades.
What must change? Again, we are reminded that first and foremost victims of abuse must be taken seriously, listened to and believed. Appropriate action must always be taken involving the appropriate authorities. Cosy cover-up, conspiracy and protecting the “old boys’ network” in any part of the evangelical constituency simply will not do. Accountability and justice are vital.
As evangelicals we have been good at pointing the finger at others – whether liberals, Anglo-Catholics, church establishments or those in different denominations. We have also been good at pointing fingers at each other.
But first and foremost, let these appalling horrors drive us – all of us – to our knees in heartfelt lament and prayerful repentance. The prayer of Daniel 9 might be one place to start. What needs to change above all else? Our hearts.
