It will soon be ten years since 2 February 2017, when Channel 4 News exposed John Smyth’s abuse of boys and young men.
Aside from relatively small sums received by three claimants, no financial redress has been given to Smyth’s victims by the conservative evangelical organisations whose representatives knew about the abuse but didn’t report it. What’s more, none of the conservative evangelical leaders who covered up the abuse have ever apologised.
In a recent edition of en, Sophie Killingley perceptively said: “We need to understand that HOW we believe is also important alongside the WHAT and WHY.” I think the conservative evangelical response to the Smyth scandal shows we’re not yet getting the “How” right. But all things are possible with God, and I continue to hope for the situation to change.
