In response to David Cook’s interesting article, ‘How do I live? (en, May), I am not persuaded that all readers will agree: that our Lord Jesus ‘edits and revises’ Moses (though he does extend and deepen him); that the law of Moses will not help us with sanctification (see 2 Timothy 3.16).
Would we agree with Paul, who delights in God’s law after the inward man (Romans 7.22)? Do we agree with our Lord’s own words in Matthew 5.18: ‘Until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the law’?
The ceremonial and civil laws have been fulfilled in Christ. The moral law of God is unchanging, for God does not change. It shows us as believers what pleases God, and thereby how to show him our love.
We live in an antinomian society. If we in any way diminish our clarity regarding, or our love and respect for, God’s moral law, to that extent our unbelieving friends will have a less clear idea of why they need a saviour and our children will have a less clear idea of what loving and serving God and neighbour involves.
