A bishop of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina, part of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), has been censured after taking part in a service alongside a bishop from the Episcopal Church, despite the two denominations being in broken communion.
Orthodox Anglicans were left upset and confused in August, when Bishop Chip Edgar publicly dedicated a school chapel with his counterpart in the Episcopal Church, Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley, during an ecumenical service – implying a unity and theological alignment between the two denominations that doesn’t exist.
Formally charged by fellow bishops just two weeks later, Edgar admitted he “should not have participated in the dedication service in the manner that he did," according to the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina. His admission of guilt avoided a lengthy trial and ultimately led to his censure with no accompanying pastoral admonition.
