Persecution of Christians continues to grow in Algeria, with Christians now effectively forced underground due to pressure on church premises, personnel and resources.

en has previously reported on growing persecution in the African nation, mostly driven by the state. A Voice of Persecuted Christians (formerly Release International) partner has told us about how the situation continues to deteriorate.

They revealed that the evangelical church “has effectively been driven underground” due to pressure which “is coming from the state at the highest level”. Pressure is “systematic and threefold”, with more than 50 churches closed in the last two years, 65 church members prosecuted by the state for “holding unauthorised worship” despite there being nowhere to hold sanctioned services, and strict prohibitions on the printing of Bibles or the posting of online Christian content.
