The removal of Cuba’s “dictatorial” government is urgently required to bring an end to difficulties facing the nation amidst an ongoing US naval blockade, according to pastors in the nation.
As we reported last month, the situation within the Caribbean country remains tense as ongoing US action squeezes its resources. Electricity, food and water are all in increasingly short supply, placing communities under huge pressure and also impacting how local churches operate.
en spoke to two pastors in Cuba, both of whom are affiliated with Open Doors.
Pastor Luis* spoke of how the Cuban people are “not living with dignity” due to the worsening crisis and are “suffering the consequences of this dictatorial regime”, with many hoping that the US will intervene on their behalf to bring about material change to the situation.
Speaking about how events have impacted the church, he said: “Although, as Christians, we depend on God, we are still deeply affected. The lack of electricity has forced us to adapt how we hold church services and house gatherings. The shortage of clean water, food, and access to a dollar-based economy are major challenges. As a result, the church is significantly affected.”
Pastor Moisés* spoke similarly about the challenges facing the church but also about new opportunities which have arisen: “This situation has created opportunities for churches to carry out aid initiatives, such as distributing food and offering prayer support. Many people are turning to God as their only hope in the midst of the crisis, leading to a kind of revival in local churches. At the same time, there has been an increase in government surveillance and pressure on church leaders and members.”
