Scottish abortion rates higher than ever

Last year witnessed the highest recorded number of abortions carried out in Scotland according to new statistics released by Public Health Scotland.

Up by more than 50 percent since 2016, 18,783 abortions were performed, ending the lives of thousands of unborn babies.

According to the data, Lanarkshire saw the greatest increase in abortions of any region in Scotland in the last 10 years with 85.83 percent more abortions recorded.

"Many claim that abortion provides freedom for women. They say it’s ‘necessary health care’, even a ‘reproductive right’. But in reality, women have been let down by this dreadful lie,” said Sharon James, Social Policy Analyst for The Christian Institute. “The way to abortion is often paved with bitter tears. And it’s often followed by years of endless regret. Abortion has become the ‘choice’ that many women are expected to make. But if they are only offered one choice, that’s no choice at all.”

Since Scotland’s parliamentary elections in May, Scottish abortion activists are lobbying for Holyrood to adopt even more extreme abortion legislation which would scrap the 24-week abortion time limit and allow abortions on social grounds, including sex selection, right up to birth.

Should the proposed law be adopted, Scotland would have some of the most drastic abortion legislation in the world, even compared to many EU countries where the most common abortion time limit is 12 weeks.

"Every single one of these abortions in 2025 represents a baby’s life lost. Every one represents a mother in Scotland who has been betrayed by a false promise. In every case, both lives matter,” said James.

"With figures rising year on year, we must recommit to praying and working for the day when abortion is regarded as utterly unthinkable – a relic of a barbaric past."
