More Biblically orthodox candidates are standing in the current "tightly contested" elections for the Church of England's ruling body, a leading evangelical says.

John Dunnett, the National Director of the Church of England Evangelical Council (CEEC), says the crucial ballot is also serving to "unify" and "galvanise" those holding to the Church of England’s Scriptural foundations.

Voting is well under way for the next five-year term of the Church of England’s General Synod. The elections are being closely contested. There are several groups endorsing and campaigning for candidates. These include the Alliance, which takes a traditional stance on matters of sexuality and morality, and includes the CEEC, charismatic New Wine and and reformed organisation ReNew, plus traditional Catholics, and Holy Trinity Brompton. Other groups include the liberal Inclusive Church/Together for the Church of England and also Save the Parish. Each hopes their respective candidates will secure majorities in the houses of clergy and laity.
