The Republic of Ireland has seen thousands of people from across the country attend the March for Jesus, which took place recently in Dublin City Centre.

The march was a celebration of the Christian faith with the aim to exalt the name of Jesus, proclaim the love of Jesus and bring about positive change in Ireland. The Irish event is part of the Global Marches for Jesus, which began in England in the 1980s, and now takes place in many countries worldwide.

The march began in Dublin’s Garden of Remembrance and concluded at St Stephen’s Green with worship, prayer and testimonies. The theme of the march was Titus 2v13 which refers to “waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ”. The family-friendly event included activities for children and was attended by people of all ages. Over 30 churches from across Ireland participated in the march and Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTE, reported on the event.

Meanwhile in October Ireland’s presidential election took place. The Republic of Ireland elects a president every seven years and all Irish citizens are eligible to vote in the election which took place on Friday 24 October. Catherine Connolly, a current TD (MP) for the Galway West constituency, won the election with a landslide victory, defeating Heather Humphries, a Presbyterian and a previous TD for the Irish border constituency of Cavan-Monaghan and a former government minister.

Catherine Connolly will be Ireland’s third female president and in November she will take over from the current president, Michael D. Higgins, who has served two terms as president of Ireland.

There is a great need for the gospel in the Republic of Ireland, especially along the West coast, which currently has very few evangelical churches. We pray that in this time of leadership change, the aims of the March for Jesus will be fulfilled in Ireland.
