The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children is to take legal action against Westminster after regulations were introduced compelling the devolved Northern Ireland Government to commission abortion services.
SPUC is campaigning to raise more than £100,000 to fund a judicial review against the ‘illegitimate and unconstitutional’ regulations. SPUC said it has a ‘powerful’ legal team already in place.
Liam Gibson of the SPUC said: ‘We are calling for all pro-life voices to unite in backing this case. The politicians making the decisions about our abortion laws must be accountable to the people of Northern Ireland. This is essential if full legal protection for unborn children is ever to be restored.’
If Westminster succeeds in forcing abortion services on the region, abortion statistics for the UK will soar yet further.
As at 27 April, the 53rd anniversary of the Abortion Act, 9,675,153 unborn babies were aborted in England, Wales and Scotland – the equivalent of one every three minutes.
Meanwhile, the value of a baby’s life in the womb has been highlighted in a story widely covered by the press. Baby Mila (Spanish for ‘miracle’) underwent an operation in the womb at 23 weeks’ gestation after being diagnosed with spina bifida at a routine scan. Following the successful surgery, Mila was born in March 2021 without paralysis and is reportedly developing well. A SPUC spokesperson said: ‘It is good to see a disabled unborn child’s life cherished in this way. It also highlights the brutal discrimination against babies with spina bifida and other disabilities, many of whom were killed by abortion.’ Mila is not unique: since the cutting-edge procedure became available on the NHS in January 2020, 32 babies have so far benefitted from it. But abortion remains available right up to birth in England, Wales and Scotland if the baby has a disability.
