Through the Roof, a Christian disability charity, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
During those 20 years, it has distributed 20,000 wheelchairs, crutches and mobility aids to disabled people in 13 developing countries and shared the gospel with 40,000 people across the world.
It has blessed 6,000 disabled people with joy and friendship through groups and holidays and equipped thousands of Christians and churches to ensure disabled people are included more fully in church life.
According to the World Health Organisation there are 1 billion disabled people in the world, of whom 20 million need a wheelchair but cannot afford one.
Wheelchairs and Bibles
A £42 donation enables Through the Roof to take an old wheelchair that would have been thrown into landfill, send it to be refurbished by a UK prison workshop and then ship it out to a developing country, sending a team of Christian therapists and technicians to customise and fit each container-load of wheelchairs for the recipients. Everyone who receives a wheelchair also receives a Bible in their own language and they and their families hear a gospel message.
Through the Roof have produced celebration packs, to help people celebrate and at the same time raise funds for and awareness of the charity’s work. Each pack contains invitations, a DVD about Through the Roof’s work, and other goodies. Through the Roof hopes that each celebration held will raise at least £80 for the charity’s work.
