Late last year Donald Trump declared that the US would recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel.
For many tourists to the Holy Land this seemed fairly uncontroversial. Given that this is the location of the Israeli Parliament, many visitors always assumed Jerusalem was its capital. However, in practice Tel Aviv has been the internationally recognized capital with diplomatic missions located there. Trump’s plan to move the American embassy has created real friction on the ground.

An 18-year-old Christian lost her job in September after publicly sharing her opposition to same sex marriage on Facebook.
Her employer, Madlin Sims, said: ‘Today I fired a staff member who made it public knowledge that they feel ‘it’s okay to vote no’. Advertising your desire to vote no for SSM is, in my eyes, hate speech. Voting no is homophobic. Advertising your homophobia is hate speech. It’s not okay to vote no.’

The TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1984 novel The Handmaid’s Tale received a lauded debut in the US several months ago.
It has finally hit our screens, courtesy of Channel 4. The hype and early reviews revealed a common thread as many reviewers compared the dystopian world of the adaptation to the current political and social climate of the US. It only takes a brief scan through the Twitter hashtag to see that the regular viewing public find an uncomfortable level of resonance between the show and Donald Trump and Mike Pence’s attitudes towards women.

Kellyanne Conway successfully coined a phrase that will ensure her place in history.
It’s not clear what Donald Trump’s spokesperson intended by using the term ‘alternative facts’. But in a televised interview discussing the 2017 Presidential Inauguration she responded with ‘alternative facts’ to the general consensus that the attendance had not been high. Quick as a flash, the interviewer responded: ‘Alternative facts are not facts. They are falsehoods.’

On 5 June, Sunil Gomez, a Christian grocer, was murdered inside his shop in a Christian neighbourhood in the district of Natore.
On 7 June, Ananda Gopal Ganuli, a Hindu religious leader, was killed in Jhenaidah after performing his regular religious rites in a temple in the Naldanga area, where he served as a priest. Attacks on religious minorities by extremist groups in Bangladesh have escalated rapidly in recent months. Responsibility for the murders has reportedly been claimed by Daesh (Islamic State).

Boundaries are a big deal. Donald Trump
has proposed a
‘Great Wall of America’
between the US and Mexico.
In Europe the functioning, or otherwise, of
the ‘Schengen Area’ is the greatest challenge
that the EU has faced in a while and, of
course, we all anticipate that 2016 will bring
a referendum on our membership of the
European Union, which again will be largely
focussed on the merits and demerits of freedom of movement of capital, people, goods
and services across borders. We could go on.
