This is a thoroughly enjoyable book, written as a commentary about trees, forests and wood in the Bible.
It takes the reader through God’s Word and highlights each mention of the subject as it appears. There is a compendium of trees and shrubs referred to in the Bible, and an index of scriptural references. The book has photographs and original art work throughout, clearly presented and accessible to all. It would be particularly relevant to those interested in horticulture or natural history and as a resource in family Bible study.
Passion for the Lord
The author has written with obvious passion for both his profession and his Lord, explaining to those unfamiliar with a rural or pastoral lifestyle the biblical metaphors, analogies and allegories used in Scripture. He highlights tantalising facts and images conveyed through the lens of focusing on trees and forests and their uses – actual and symbolic. It is often thought-provoking, sometimes challenging and is particularly helpful in explaining some of the imagery used in the writings of the prophets.
As I read this book I thought often how useful it would have been to us when our four children were young. Always on the look-out for practical information to confirm the relevance of God’s Word to today’s life and times, this book has lots of ideas to pursue, examples to follow (or avoid), and little nuggets of general knowledge that will generally help to maintain interest in and build confidence in Scripture. One of the children (now grown up) was found taking a photograph of the quotation from John Evelyn ‘trees and woods have twice saved the world; first by the ark and then by the cross’ for use with her youth group. A queue has now formed to borrow and read the book on the strength of what they have seen by flicking through it!
