PURE JOY
Rediscover your conscience.
By Christopher Ash
IVP. 200 pages. £9.99
ISBN 978 1 844 745 852

In his distinctively thorough and thoughtful way, Christopher Ash unpacks the Scripture’s teaching on conscience with gospel clarity and pastoral sensitivity.

The various pastoral scenarios at the start and throughout each chapter help to root the truths unpacked in real life. To quote the author: ‘I want you to take your conscience out of the cupboard, dust it down, bring it back into daily life and discover its power to do you good’. It certainly encouraged this reviewer to do just that.

Each chapter is helpful and searching but, as the author stresses, the most important is Chapter 7, ‘The C l e a n s e d Conscience’. In this chapter he takes us to the heart of the gospel as revealed in the book of Hebrews: how because of the blood of our Lord Jesus the believer can approach God with a cleansed conscience again and again. The book brought to mind the Wesley hymn, O Jesus full of truth and grace.
