Jane Haining, a Scottish missionary who cared for Christian and Jewish children at a Budapest school in the 1930s, has been honoured on a special memorial wall at Auschwitz.
On 3 September, relatives took part in a memorial service at Auschwitz outside block nine, where she had been held prisoner. In November 2025, a brass Stolperstein - “stumbling stone” - in memory of Haining was installed outside the former St Stephen’s Church building in Edinburgh.
An evangelical Christian, Haining became matron at the Church of Scotland mission school in 1932. She was arrested in April 1944 and eventually sent with Hungarian Jews to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp. She died weeks later aged 47, months before the camp was liberated.
