This earthly pilgrimage

The carer

It seems we live increasingly in a society which pays only lip-service to concern for the elderly. By contrast, the Bible gives such care a high priority. Here the US writer Walter Wangerin has something to say . . .

The Commandments have not expired, nor have the holy promises that attend them been abolished.

When, therefore, I am asked regarding the future of some human community, some family, some nation - or the church, the visible church itself! - straightway I look for obedience to the commandments of God. Particularly I wonder regarding the one which urges honour for the parents: I look to see whether someone is singing songs to his aged mother - and if I can find him, I say: 'The signs are good'.
