Starting university? Four things to remember

How can I build genuine friendships and find acceptance? How can I live graciously with people whose beliefs and values differ from mine? How can I speak about my faith honestly, clearly and respectfully?

I recently heard these questions discussed on a radio programme for freshers preparing to enter university called: Why university is (not) a faith killer. While the discussions were reasonable, the programme seemed to assume that Christian students entering university need to win acceptance and influence their non-Christian peers. This aim may be commendable, yet they can leave freshers or returning students feeling on the defensive and at a disadvantage before they even arrive.

That apprehension is understandable. Many students are moving from the relative dependence of living at home to a new season of independence. They will meet people whose backgrounds, beliefs and experiences differ widely from their own, including people of many faiths and none.

If you are a student, remember:

University is only the start

University is only the beginning of learning to live faithfully among people with different beliefs. You may encounter similar challenges in the workplace after graduation. Recognising this now can help you meet these with wisdom, confidence and grace.

Find community

It is neither possible nor wise to become close friends with everyone in your hall, course, societies or church. Begin by becoming part of a healthy local church, where fellow Christians can offer friendship, Biblical teaching and practical support. Look for appropriate ways to serve and consider joining your university’s Christian Union or a parachurch group such as the Navigators or Agapé UK. These organisations may include a range of theological perspectives, so exercise discernment and seek advice from your local church leader when needed. At the same time, take a genuine interest in people beyond Christian circles. Pray for good Christian friends and aim to be a gracious and dependable friend to others.

Remember who you are

As a Christian, your “new birth”, the spiritual life that begins through faith in Jesus, gives you an identity rooted in Jesus Christ (John 3v3-8) rather than one dictated by society. Remember what Christ accomplished for you through His death at Calvary and how the Holy Spirit continues to shape you through sanctification by His Word.

Some people may find your convictions unusual, and some may oppose them; Jesus said, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you” (John 15v18). Even so, your calling is not to withdraw from university life but to take part in it with humility, courage and love. As the familiar saying puts it, Christians are “in the world but not of the world”.

Expect challenge

Speak about your faith politely, clearly and truthfully, and listen carefully when others explain what they believe. You cannot control how every person will respond and the gospel’s sin-exposing and Christ-exalting message may be a “stumbling block” or appear to be “foolishness” to some (1 Corinthians 1v23). Others may challenge your convictions or try to change your mind. Respond without hostility, remembering that your task is to bear faithful witness rather than to win every argument. The outcome belongs to the Lord, not to you. As Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10v27).

University may bring pressure, disagreement and uncertainty, but Christ’s final word to His people is peace and courage: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16v33). That promise frees Christian students not merely to defend themselves, but to live openly, listen well, form genuine friendships and bear witness with grace.
