The en team were very pleased to receive 1,152 responses to the Readers’ Survey in the October issue. Such a large submission enables us to have confidence that data collected on the attitudes and demographics of en readers is robust. Thank you to those who took the time to complete the questionnaire.
One such respondent, Maggie Sleeman, was thrilled to hear she had won the prize draw promised to those who participated. The draw took place at a gathering of en staff in central London in January and the choice of either: a £200 book voucher, a Kindle Paperwhite (with £50 worth of Christian books) or a donation of £200 to a preferred charity, was offered to Maggie soon after. She chose the latter, and en had the privilege of transferring the funds to Christian Development Uganda, a UK-based charity with over thirty years’ experience supporting local partners with evangelism and community development projects among some of the neediest rural communities in south-west Uganda (christiandevelopmentuganda.org.uk).
When en contacted Maggie, we took the opportunity to ask a few questions.
en: How long have you been reading en?
MS: My father used to take Evangelical Times and later transferred to Evangelicals Now. I would enjoy reading the odd article in en from time to time when I lived with my parents. But I have had my own subscription to en for about four years. I tend to read it on Sunday afternoons where I have time to both read and pray.
en: What do you like about the paper?
MS: It’s well written and easy to read. The paper tells me things I wouldn’t know about otherwise. For example, stories of persecuted Christians around the world. And I find many of the articles very helpful. I like to pray for various evangelical ministries, and the stories provide material for that. I particularly enjoy the “Ten Questions” feature on the back page.
en: What do you do for a living?
MS: I used to be the Head Gardener at Christ Church in Oxford, but I gave up my post to study garden design at Pershore College for two years. However, I’ve now returned to Christ Church as Assistant Head Gardener.
en: Where do you go to church?
MS: St Ebbe’s in the centre of Oxford.
