A Cambridge college omitted two crucial words from a Bible reading when its service was broadcast on the BBC.

Selwyn College’s choral evensong, transmitted on Radio 3 on 30 June, included a Scripture lesson from 1 Corinthians 6.

But evangelical listeners quickly picked up that two words were left out when it came to verse nine. The translation being used was the New Revised Standard Version and the words omitted were ‘male prostitutes’ and ‘sodomites’.

As read, verses nine and ten were heard to say: ‘Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers … thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers – none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.’

Contacted by en, college chaplain Canon Hugh Shilson-Thomas said: ‘It was probably not the best idea.’ He did not elaborate further.
