The True Believer: The Marks and Benefits of True Faith
X-ray for our souls
THE TRUE BELIEVER
The Marks and Benefits of True Faith
By Jonathan Edwards
Soli Deo Gloria. 315 pages
ISBN 1 57358 121 6
The aim of the book is two-fold. It is concerned, firstly, to distinguish between real and counterfeit faith. In an age of 'shallow conversions' and 'cheap grace', we are encouraged to 'examine ourselves'. It is not a book to give to those struggling to find assurance, but to those who are self-assured and worldly.
The second concern of the book is to set out 'the blessings that come to those with true faith'. At a time when we get so absorbed with the here and now, Edwards masterfully directs our attention to the world to come. He skilfully elaborates on the superior state now of believers who have gone ahead of us, and of the glories that will be ours when Christ returns.
This is not an academic treatise. The author goes for the heart as well as the head. Nor does he stop there. He prods us at every point; probing into our lifestyles, to see whether we are mere hypocrites without true faith, and whether we are living worthy of the glorious benefits conferred upon believers.
These are, however, sermons from a bygone age. They use language that will not come easily to a casual reader, and will not always make ready sense to those unacquainted with older meanings of words. They talk about having 'a good estate before God', and of letting God 'be peculiar with you'. The serious student will need to put in a good deal of effort to extract the treasure that is here.
