Christian MPs in Chile have signed the ‘Commitment to Life’ document, publicly expressing their opposition to a new draft law proposing the legalisation of free abortion.

The document expresses the dissatisfaction of MPs from across the political divide with the proposed change in legislation. In it they re-committed to defending life and to supporting women enduring difficult pregnancies amidst challenging circumstances, reports Evangelical Focus.

Signatories also spoke in favour of greater support for mothers in Chile, and highlighted the need for the country to deal with a national crisis involving the breaching of the rights of many vulnerable children before they even consider legislating on an issue as big as abortion, with 51 children murdered in 2024, and 6,000 trapped in child sexual abuse networks.

The document was signed at an event set up by Republican Party MP Stephan Schubert in the Hall of Honour at the Chilean National Congress. The event also featured the screening of Amada (which means Beloved), a movie which highlights the conflicting emotions which come with deciding whether to have an abortion.

Schubert said: ‘We are very pleased to report that parliamentarians from different parties have signed a cross-party commitment for life. A truly just society must offer different alternatives to accompany those women who are going through very complex situations. Life is a fundamental right that must be protected.’
