On 8 and 9 September the annual theological conference Giornate Teologiche was hosted at IFED (Istituto di Formazione Evangelica e Documentazione – the Evangelical Training and Documentation Institute) in Padua, Italy.
On the fifth centenary of the 95 Theses posted on Wittenberg Cathedral’s door, it was more than natural that the focus of the conference would be on Reformation. For the 300 attendees, the conference was an in-depth, richly stimulating meeting that urged everyone to reflect and live the evangelical faith in an equally integral and integrated way.
Italy: new church in Rome

The first building since 1925 has been purchased by an evangelical church in central Rome (half a mile from the Coliseum) to be a space for public worship.
The first hub for gospel work in decades has been launched to foster evangelical collaboration in the city and the first Protestant library to be opened in Rome since 1870 will encourage training and scholarship.
Poland: leaders gather from across Europe

In May, some 900 Christian leaders from across Europe gathered at a hotel in Wisla in Poland for the annual European Leadership Forum (ELF).
The vision of this conference is to renew the biblical church and thereby to re-evangelise Europe. It brings experienced leaders with a proven track record in ministry together with the emerging leaders of the next generation, so as to equip and envision them for their ministries. The conference offers a wide range of networks linking leaders who specialise in different aspects of evangelical leadership, including theology, preaching, counselling, youth ministry and heading up organisations.
Carey: Roman takeover?

Understandably, Luther and the great matters of the Reformation took pole position at the annual Carey Conference for pastors and wives and Christian workers this year.
Held at the Hayes Swanick, 3-5 January, there was quite a raft of different speakers. Paul Gibson, pastor at Wheelock Heath, roared away from the start with an excellent biography of Martin Luther that focussed helpfully on the great Reformer’s weaknesses. Anfechtungen became the buzz word! There were superb Bible readings from Rupert Bentley-Taylor on the power of the Word (Isaiah 55) and the power of the gospel (1 Corinthians 1) – very much Reformation concerns. John Benton spoke on lessons for leaders from the psychology of Samson. Linda Alcock did a brilliant job with the women’s track, leading the sisters through Titus, and Ian Fry gave a sparkling and yet very disturbing talk on the needs of children and the work among young people in today’s church.

the December en. I still remember that as
soon as the present Pope was instituted to his
office, he opened the Vatican window and
prayed in public. Excellent! – apart from the
fact that he prayed to the Virgin Mary.
