According to the developer Plus Alpha (which doesn’t appear to be connected with the Alpha evangelistic course), Not Just Words is smarter than your average Bible Search app and, I must admit, this app is very clever.
I cannot count the number of times I wanted to search for a Psalm or one of the OT prophecies and didn’t know the exact word or term used in the passage (and don’t get me started about all the different translations!).
Searching by synonym
Not Just Words offers an extensive search tool for multiple translations. Also, for example, it has a thesaurus that will search synonyms and common alternative words for what you have searched.
The user interface is simple and looks a lot like a regular browser on your phone. You can toggle different translations off or on so you can search just one or compare any of the seven that are available. The one thing I will say is that the Bible translations on offer are limited. Yes, seven are offered, but there are only two that would be read regularly by congregations and publicly in church services (KJV and NIV [1984]).
More good translations
My hope is that in the coming months and years this app will include more used translations such as the ESV, NLT, and CSB. This tool is especially helpful for searching themes within specific Bible books. You can search ‘pray in Romans’ or ‘spirit in New Testament’. Essentially, this app is an electronic glossary for your Bible! With added translations, I think this app could be a great tool in every believer’s hands.
