This podcast says of itself: ‘With the second series, we’ll meet five experts whose work gets to the heart of some of the most challenging Old Testament texts.’
The first series was reviewed in en by Ros Clarke in November 2020. It focused on how we can trust and find the relevance of the Gospels. This series, released in mid-February, is concentrating on the Old Testament.
The podcast is conversational and discusses how ‘we might read, wrestle with, and still really enjoy the Old Testament’ with five researchers on how we navigate tricky OT texts.
It is hosted by Dr Andrew Ollerton, a theologian, pastor and author who has story that recently published The Bible: a makes sense of life. In episode one, Ollerton is joined by Dr Peter J. Williams. Williams is the Principal of Tyndale House (the co-producer of the podcast) as well as a member of the translation committee for the English Standard Version of the Bible.
Ollerton is a gifted interviewer, teeing up questions for Williams and inserting narration and questions seamlessly.
Ollerton and Williams visit some OT passages that may even sound fanciful, for example Elisha and the calling of the she-bears. However, Williams reasons that not only are these stories true, but they aid the overarching narrative of the Old Testament.
I found this podcast really engaging and thoroughly enjoyed listening. Especially when Ollerton challenges Williams with the question of talking animals.
Although both are incredibly intelligent men, the questions and answers are set up in a way that anyone, be it the new convert or the seasoned Bible reader, can enjoy and learn from this podcast.
