This was the question asked by Rich Wilson, National Team Leader for Fusion, at a recent conference.1 Fusion's answer to that question has become the 'Love your Uni' campaign, which is 'dreaming about a whole generation of students who can love beyond themselves'.2 That sounds great. But digging beneath the surface reveals a more disturbing story- http://e-n.org.uk/4191-How-to-love-your-uni.htm e-n.org.uk4191 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 The Commentary - Diana, the Olympic flame and the human condition In the last few weeks the six-month inquest into the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, in a car crash in Paris back in 1997 finally came to an end. The jury decided that they were unlawfully killed, laying the blame at the feet of the chauffeur, Henri Paul, who had been drinking, and the paparazzi who had recklessly pursued the princess's car in the quest for photographs. The coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, said that there was 'not a shred of evidence' in support of Mr. Mohamed Al Fayed's conspiracy theory that the princess and his son were actually murdered as part of an Establishment plot. But, despite the verdict of the jury, Mr. Fayed subsequently promised that his campaign to prove an under cover MI6 assassination would continue. http://e-n.org.uk/4192-The-Commentary.htm e-n.org.uk4192 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 How to do Christianity Explored at work Christianity Explored is a ten-week evangelistic course, prepared by Rico Tice, which takes people through the Gospel of Mark. It has been used successfully in many churches as friends have been invited along to share a meal, get to grips with the material and ask any questions they like. http://e-n.org.uk/4193-How-to-do-Christianity-Explored-at-work.htm e-n.org.uk4193 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 LSD to PhD - The personal testimony of Jewish evangelist, Dr. Michael Brown It was 1.30 am in September 1971. I was 16, but already I had earned the nicknames 'Drug Bear' and 'Iron Man'. I could do greater quantities of drugs than any of my friends. But this time I went too far. I took enough mescaline for 30 people, and my friends put me on a bus alone, sending me home to fend for myself. They thought it was a big joke! Actually it was a matter of life and death. http://e-n.org.uk/4194-LSD-to-PhD.htm e-n.org.uk4194 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 Common errors in understanding the Kingdom - By D.A. Carson, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL, USA What are the most common errors that people make when it comes to understanding and proclaiming the kingdom? I shall list a handful. They are in no particular order of importance, primarily because several of these interpretive errors belong to distinctive groups. http://e-n.org.uk/4197-Common-errors-in-understanding-the-Kingdom.htm e-n.org.uk4197 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 McTraining! - About Cornhill Scotland What do you do when you hit a crossroads in life? After working in film and television for the last 15 years, in London and Glasgow, a couple of years ago I was becoming aware that I had the potential to have some time on my hands. I felt that God was challenging me to do something, but I didn't know what! http://e-n.org.uk/4199-McTraining.htm e-n.org.uk4199 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 What happens when you join a small church? David Hall describes how one small Anglican church in rural Sussex mobilised for mission. After a fitful night's sleep, the soldiers emerge from their dug-in positions, stretch and check their weapons one last time. They have all written their final letters, now they scan the horizon apprehensively, grateful for air support, special forces already in position, artillery back-up, the naval blockade and, above all, their colleagues in the regiment. http://e-n.org.uk/4200-What-happens-when-you-join-a-small-church.htm e-n.org.uk4200 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 Monthly media and arts column - 'I can't do this all on my own - I'm no Superman' TV hospital drama Scrubs tells young men that it's OK to lean on other people for support. Everyone feels overwhelmed every now and then. Whether it's the rigours of the job, the family or just the daily business of living, everyone recognises that life is not always easy. So we need other people to help get us through it. This is the premise of Scrubs, a hospital drama from the States, that has been running since October 2001 and which is now gaining in popularity this side of the Atlantic, particularly among young men. http://e-n.org.uk/4202-Monthly-media-and-arts-column.htm e-n.org.uk4202 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 Letter from America - A Common Humanity but a Different Word After various senior Moslem and Christian clerics co-signed a document called 'A Common Word' in the New York Times, John Piper appeared on YouTube distancing himself from the document. More recently still, Yale University is calling a conference to further develop the 'common word' agenda. You can find details about that at http://www.yaledailynews.com/articles/view/24022 http://e-n.org.uk/4203-Letter-from-America.htm e-n.org.uk4203 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 The Music Exchange - Singing with the kids A pile of nails in your hand does not amount to much. But imagine beyond these nails to see the plain walls about you hung with pictures. Pictures soaked in family memories — that first holiday by the beach, the meal celebrating granny's 90th, the wedding of your eldest. The nails do not amount to much — seeing beyond the nails is priceless. http://e-n.org.uk/4204-The-Music-Exchange.htm e-n.org.uk4204 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 The Third Degree - Gospels or baked beans? - Student life Which will you buy? That was the challenge UCCF presented to its supporters earlier this year à well, sort of. 59p will buy you a tin of Tesco Organic Baked Beans, but it's also the cost of putting a copy of Mark's Gospel in the hands of a non-Christian student. It's all linked to 'FREE', our project to distribute 400,000 copies of Mark on university campuses across the Britain in the coming academic year. http://e-n.org.uk/4205-The-Third-Degree.htm e-n.org.uk4205 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 Cranach and Luther - Painter and theologian The Royal Academy's current exhibition of the work of the German painter Lucas Cranach is a rare opportunity to study the career of an artist who became one of the best known propagandists for the Protestant Reformation http://e-n.org.uk/4206-Cranach-and-Luther.htm e-n.org.uk4206 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0 UK Christianity in the 21st century The new edition of Religious Trends (Christian Research) gives details of all the 275 denominations now constituting the Christian scene in the UK. It lists the number of members, churches and ministers for each of the years 2000, 2002-2006 with an estimate for 2010. The information was provided by each denomination, or estimated on their behalf. It also forecasts the overall figures ahead for 40 years to 2050. The basic figures are more interesting than they might look at first glance! http://e-n.org.uk/4208-UK-Christianity-in-the-21st-century.htm e-n.org.uk4208 Thu, 01 May 2008 09:00:00 0
