In an age when it is increasingly difficult to communicate Bible truth to children and young people, it is encouraging to have two extremely readable, reliable examples, both of which are packed with biblical truth for 5-12 year-olds.
Take care in the bath contains 52 stories for families to enjoy together, perhaps during family prayer time, or for older children to read individually. Jim Cromarty is a popular Australian author who has already written a number of other books for family reading. He uses the family's pet dog, Wags, to great effect in illustrating many of the stories and this certainly makes them come alive for young children. Each story is quite short but packed with spiritual lessons for parents and children alike, and ends with three or four questions for the reader to think about. I particularly enjoyed the story about the dog who sat on the 'tucker box', which was a graphic illustration of God's faithfulness towards us.
The 21st century children's Bible is a beautifully illustrated book containing 365 stories, Bible facts and background features which would be particularly attractive to a younger reader with no prior knowledge of God's Word. Each story is retold in easily understandable language with full-colour illustrations. It has a number of additional 'scene-setters' and reference panels that explain more about the meaning of the stories. It has a very helpful index of all the stories and where one can find a number of special feature pages about life in Old and New Testament times. I think this would make a super gift for any child in the 5-12 age range - their parents would probably find it a good read too!
