The True and Living God
THE TRUE AND LIVING GOD
By Dr. Kim Hawtrey

This is another very readable, practical volume which redirects the Christian away from the gods of this present age back to a vital life of discipleship.
The author sets about his task by drawing out some of the key issues which ensnare us in activities and habits that are God-denying. His thesis is that 20th-century Christians have 'sold out' to alternative gods, who promise quick fixes and material reward. In this regard, his third chapter, which details some of these idols, is particularly helpful. They include the role of television, materialism, sport, the career-driven, and even those whose families become their idols. All this is done in a way which is balanced and careful.
In the second and third sections, Hawtrey goes on to paint a picture of Christ and the importance of seeking the kingdom of the true God over and above all other things. His point is that once God is central in the lifestyle of the Christian, then all other activities and priorities will have their rightful place in the context of God's primacy, rather than usurping it.
Several criticisms: the contemporary feel of the book is both a strength (in communicating the message easily) and a failing (it will quickly date). Also, it suffers from 'Pearl Necklace Syndrome', meaning that it tends to make a short point and illustrate it, only to move on to the next one, each illustration being like pearls on a necklace. As a heuristic device, this can become rather wearisome after a while.
However, that aside, this is largely a helpful book, especially for those tired of the vacuity of the idols of the age.
