CY / CY Nano / Soul DVDCY: such a great resourceCY AND CY NANO LEADER’S GUIDE CY AND CY NANO HANDBOOKS SOUL DVD Since its launch, many churches have used and many people been blessed through the Christianity Explored course. In 2006, Christianity Explored gave birth to a new evangelistic resource aimed at young people — the CY Course. After gleaning from the experience of many youth leaders in churches worldwide, a second edition of the CY course has now been launched. The course lasts for seven sessions. Like Christianity Explored, it works through Mark’s Gospel and has a strong emphasis on teaching the seriousness of sin and the remarkable grace shown to us in Jesus. The suggested weekly format is: For those familiar with the original CY course, one of the major amendments to the new version is that the course now has two distinct target age groups. CY Nano is aimed at 11-14s, while CY is aimed at those 15 and over. There are separate handbooks for CY Nano and CY — with a layout for each that reflects the target age group (you only get cartoon captions in the Nano handbooks!). The handbooks contain discussion questions and summaries of the talks and are for each participant on the course. The Leader’s Guide contains all the details of how to run both CY and CY Nano. This includes explanations of the group activities, all the questions for discussion (along with some suggested answers) and detailed talk outlines. Furthermore, it gives valuable training material and practical advice about running a course. One of the most useful additions to the new Leader’s Guide is an extensive appendix looking at common questions about Mark’s Gospel and Christian belief in general. The major new feature of the updated course is the exceptionally good Soul DVD. The DVD contains seven presentations that can be used instead of ‘live talks’. Each episode, written and presented by Nate Morgan Locke, is slick, jargon free and communicates the gospel clearly and powerfully. Those who have been eagerly waiting for a CY DVD will not be disappointed by this resource. I showed some of the presentations to an older member of our church youth group — and he was both impressed by the quality and challenged by the message. I think the DVD would work best with those aged 15+ but that isn’t to say that younger teens wouldn’t be able to cope with the teaching. The overall CY and CY Nano revised package is a superb resource which is both faithful to the gospel and clear in its presentation. For me, one of strongest features of the course is that it doesn’t simply encourage participants to ‘pray the prayer’, but, rather, has a proper emphasis on the implications and cost of becoming a Christian.
