This brief book tackles an essential subject for any Christian. What does it mean to follow Jesus in our free time, hobbies, sports, TV time, music taste or other leisure activities?
In this very practical book, the author challenges us to see leisure time as time that also belongs to Jesus. He helpfully exposes the danger that all Christians face of seeing leisure time as ‘my time’ and leaving Jesus out.
To help with this problem the author first defines what leisure is, acknowledging that the boundaries of work and leisure can be blurry for many of us. He then goes on to give biblical reasons why we should rest, identifying leisure time as a gift from God. For this reason the author then gives reasons why it’s OK to enjoy ourselves in our leisure. This section of the book can be a real mind-changing chapter, given the danger some of us face of seeing leisure (or rest) as very functional, rather than a gift from God to be enjoyed. The book finishes with a healthy reminder to keep leisure in its right place as we seek to balance it with other God-given priorities.
Reading this book challenges our thinking and our practice when it comes to leisure time. It is incredibly practical and relevant to every Christian of all ages and has personally stimulated lots of fresh thinking that I’m praying will work itself out in my day-to-day living for Jesus. I hope you find it the same!
