Triumph of the bin man

JUNKIE MEETS JESUS IN A TRASH CAN

Colin Garnett’s autobiography is in the tradition of ‘before and after’ stories, the first half spanning his life before a unique encounter with Jesus, and the second detailing the changes and challenges which followed.

Colin writes in an easy, conversational style, giving us access to his thoughts as he recalls indelible incidents and key relationships at each stage of his life.

From an insecure childhood in a working class family, he travelled through a turbulent adolescence, of violence and anti-social behaviour, into full-blown drug addiction. This resulted in a vicious circle of drugs, crime and prison, from which, despite extended amounts of therapy, Colin seemed unable to escape… that is, until he ‘met Jesus in a trash can’ which was being used for baptism, when he went forward at a Prison Christian Fellowship service.

Colin’s unique conversion experience was validated by a series of ‘inside out’ changes, starting with the immediate removal of all desire for drugs.

His freedom from bondage and forgiveness in Christ opened the door for the ‘new man’ to emerge who delighted constantly in his Saviour. It is inspiring to learn how Colin’s wholehearted desire to serve Christ by helping those in the grip of drug dependency led to his setting up of a Christian rehab.

This book is a very useful resource to pass to anyone who has even the slightest inclination towards drug taking. However, I would also recommend this book to any Christian or non-Christian who needs reminding of God’s wonderful transforming power in Christ. My only criticism is that I would have liked to have reached the second part sooner!
