Refreshing holiness
JOSHUA
A devotional commentary

Reading this commentary took me back to the preaching of my boyhood. As I remember it, the sermons were thoroughly biblical, invariably expositional, and strongly applicatory.
And the application would so often be constantly fighting spiritual battles, gaining victory over sin, and repeated calls for holiness of life as essential for every Christian. That was the atmosphere of the church of my youth, and that is the atmosphere of this commentary on the book of Joshua.
The emphasis on holiness is everywhere, and it is powerfully refreshing. Dr. Peckham quotes one author as saying: ‘With the Reformation the great truth of justification, the bringing out from the bondage of Egypt, is restored to its place. But the other great truth of sanctification, the bringing in into the land with its rest and victory, has never yet taken the place in the preaching and practice of the Church which God’s Word claims for it.’ In this commentary the author seeks to restore what he sees as that imbalance. Occasionally there seems more application than exposition, but it is all good wholesome stuff.
Those who find commentaries hard going could well be cured by this one. It is straightforward, clear and relevant. The essential lessons of the life and ministry of Joshua are outlined plainly. The reader cannot but benefit from the excellent devotional emphasis, and preachers will find sermon suggestions leaping out of the page. A good £8’s worth.
I commend it heartily.
