David

Man of prayer, man of war

Refreshing read

DAVID
Man of prayer, man of war
By Walter Chantry
Banner of Truth. 294 pages

What a refreshingly readable book on the life of David! This came through the post to me providentially as I was about to start a series on the life of David — and what a help it has been!

Beginning at his anointing and ending with his death, the reader is drawn through the breathtaking life of the harp-playing shepherd boy who became Israel’s greatest king.

The style of the book is sermonic and we are told on the flyleaf that the chapters originally appeared as a series of articles for the Banner magazine around five years ago. So, for the preacher looking for an analysis of the text, this is not for you — but for the believer who wants his heart warming and his soul refreshed — this is it!!

Every chapter is a help; some raise most interesting points to be pondered — for example, how could the music of David’s harp have such a profound effect on the tormented King Saul? The chapters are accurate to the passages, sticking to the text, but giving relevant application for those fighting similar battles today.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to all — preachers, pew fillers, believers new and old!
