Every now and then you read a book that from cover to cover is an absolute pleasure to read. This is one of those books.
With useful historical information that gives the reader a full appreciation of the life, times, and disastrous consequences of a man who undoubtedly made catastrophic mistakes in his life, it shows he was still of use in God’s hands; and this is achieved without condoning any unacceptable behaviour.
We soon realise that the main character in the book is someone greater than Samson. The author wonderfully introduces the Saviour at the conclusion of every chapter by way of a comparison between the imperfections of Samson and the perfections of the Altogether Lovely One, making it an excellent devotional book reaching across the age spectrum in our churches. There is simply no substitute for warming our hearts than hearing of the One who is simply wonderful.
The style is appealing and the reader is given an honest picture of the personality of Samson, including his attitude towards his parents, relationships with the opposite sex, character flaws, prayer life, and death. The message of hope comes through very strongly and encourages us that, although we all make wrong decisions, have wrong attitudes, and make terrible mistakes in life, God can still use those who genuinely repent to the King of Love. Samson’s real enemy was not the Philistines, but the dark recesses of his own erratic heart, which he eventually overcame by the rich grace of God.
We have in this book an excellent blend of careful exegesis with challenging study aids for the individual or group that all will gain great benefit from.
